Our approach to the Physical Education curriculum

As a department we have a strong passion for Physical Education (PE) both inside and outside of school. We feel that through PE there are many opportunities to develop the person as a whole, not just the physical aspect but the mental and social element as well. We want all pupils to develop confidence, perseverance, self-respect and social skills. We are privileged in our local context to have access to the natural environment and aim to expose our students to a range of outdoor pursuits.

Through engagement in lessons and extra-curricular it is our aim that pupils’ sporting experiences at St Augustine's will be broad and varied. Pupils will engage in competitive sports and activities, giving pupils the opportunity to strive and thrive in PE, and giving them the understanding of the importance of healthy active lifestyles for the rest of their lives regardless of starting points.

Curriculum content

Key Stage 3

The Physical Education curriculum has been designed by the department to meet the needs of the national curriculum to cover a broad and balanced curriculum of activities accessible to everyone.

Pupils will learn about the theoretical and practical elements of Physical Education through a range of activities as well as the opportunity to develop skills further within the community.

Key Stage 4

Pupils in Key Stage 4 will continue to follow a curriculum designed by the department that meets the needs of the national curriculum but also participate in a further variation of activities. These activities give all pupils the opportunity to see pathways where they can carry on physical education outside of school and continue their development of physical and mental health.

Pupils who have opted to take physical education as an examination subject will be following the Btec Sport Award.
